What’s new with The General?
Sentry Insurance completed its acquisition of The General from American Family Insurance in January 2025. The General will now be Sentry’s primary brand to create a stronger presence in the non-standard auto insurance market. The General’s headquarters will remain in Nashville, Tennessee, to ensure a seamless transition for customers and employees.
The General car insurance review
The General offers standard car insurance coverage types, several discounts and an online chat option for more convenient customer service, but the carrier falls short when it comes to add-ons. Additionally, The General car insurance has a much higher-than-average National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) Complaint Index, indicating that some customers are not satisfied with the level of service they receive.
As a nonstandard car insurance provider, The General may be a good fit for high-risk drivers and those needing an SR-22 filing looking for affordable rates. The General car insurance is available in 47 states and quotes are fast and easy, as the process takes two minutes or less on its website.
Pros and cons of The General car insurance

Pros
Coverage and premiums geared toward high-risk drivers
Various discounts available
Available in 47 states and Washington, D.C.
Cons

The General car insurance cost
Based on data provided by Quadrant Information Services, the average full coverage car insurance premium from The General is $2,538 per year. The average premium for a policy with minimum coverage is $1,297 per year. Compared to the U.S. national average, which is $2,692 per year, The General’s average full coverage rate is 6 percent less, but its minimum coverage rate is 60 percent more than the national minimum average of $808 per year.
How much is The General car insurance?
Car insurance costs vary from person to person based on individual rating factors, including your driving record. Insurance companies typically charge higher premiums for drivers with speeding ticket convictions and at-fault accidents on their record. Note that while not all carriers will underwrite policies for drivers with a DUI, The General specializes in coverage for high-risk drivers. It offers coverage for drivers with DUIs, suspended licenses and those that need an SR-22 filing, as long as they meet the company's other underwriting criteria. Contact a local agent for an insurance quote to verify that your driving record qualifies for a policy.
*All rates displayed are average annual rates. Credit is not a permitted rating factor in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan.
The General car insurance quotes by age
In most states, another factor impacting your car insurance rate in most states is age. Young and newly licensed drivers typically pay higher rates because they have less experience and pose a higher insurance risk. In the table below, you can see the average cost of car insurance for a teen on their parents' policy, as well as average rates by age for drivers with their own policy.
*All rates displayed are average annual rates. Rates are based on our good driver profile, with 16- and 18-year-old drivers added to their parents’ policy.
Premiums vary between car insurance companies based on several factors, such as the type of coverage a company offers, state guidelines and available discounts. As a nonstandard insurer specializing in high-risk driving profiles, The General insurance may not be as competitive as other companies catering to the standard market.
When comparing insurance companies, looking at third-party ratings may help you learn more about a carrier's customer service, claims satisfaction and financial strength. Some of the most notable organizations that issue third-party ratings include AM Best for financial strength and J.D. Power for customer, claims and digital tools satisfaction. Due in part to The General’s small customer base, it does not receive as many ratings as some larger insurance companies with more significant market share.
The General auto insurance customer complaints
The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) tracks complaints against insurance companies and assigns each carrier complaint indexes by product type based on its size. The baseline for these indexes is 1.0. Companies that index higher than 1.0 receive more complaints than expected for their size, while companies with an index under 1.0 have fewer complaints than expected.
The General auto complaints
The General has more complaints than expected lodged with the NAIC for its private passenger auto insurance product. In 2024, it had more than five times as many complaints as other carriers of similar size. Based on this and the lack of J.D. Power scores, you may want to speak with existing policyholders before purchasing a policy from The General.

The General may be a good fit for drivers who have a spotty driving record, poor credit or a recent lapse in coverage. It may not be the best fit for drivers who qualify for coverage in the standard market.
Good2Go also specializes in high-risk drivers and advertises low minimum coverage rates, but may outsource coverage to different companies depending on driving profile and state.
The insurance market can be complicated, but Bankrate's insurance editorial team used our unique perspective to bring readers the information they need to make educated decisions when shopping for a policy.

Is The General a good insurance company?
Based on Bankrate insurance team's in-depth analysis, The General may be a good auto insurance provider for high-risk drivers looking for comprehensive digital tools and a variety of discounts. However, if you have a clean driving record, other car insurance companies may offer better customer service ratings and more options for policy customization.
What are real-life customers saying about The General?
When searching for new insurance, hearing from real-life customers can give you a more holistic view of the company you are considering. To help make this process a little easier, Bankrate reviewed several review sites and social discourse platforms to see what policyholders have to say about their recent experiences with The General. Overall, customers note that The General will offer an insurance policy to drivers with a challenging driving history and that the rates tend to be lower than other providers.
Reddit
The common thread from most of The General insurance reviews on Reddit is that drivers who could not secure insurance with other companies were able to purchase a policy with The General, but express frustration with The General’s cancellation and billing processes. One benefit of Reddit is that while there might not be several reviews, users can leave comment threads on an existing post, which can help you see trends in a particular company's weakness.

Difficult to cancel
This is the most excruciating place to cancel service to. They want a written note saying you want to cancel, a proof of insurance that you are now using and even more documentation. On top of they they will still charge you monthly where you have to call and cancel it again asking for refunds as you already canceled it. They will claim that you are missing stuff they asked for there for they can't cancel. You will need to ask for a manager like a Karen and demand they cancel it right away or you will get other places involved like lawyers and BBB. This was over three months of just trying to cancel it. It was a nightmare. Avoid at all cost!
Trustpilot has more individual reviews for The General than Reddit and the experience noted is on the more positive side. Overall, users are happy to have found a company to provide auto insurance and state that signing up for insurance was accessible and more affordable than anticipated.

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverage that meets each state’s requirements. These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes. Your quotes will differ.
If otherwise specified, the base profile has been modified with the following driver characteristics:
Other profiles
Rates were calculated based on the following insurance credit tiers assigned to our drivers: “poor, average, good (base) and excellent.” Insurance credit tiers factor in your official credit scores but are not dependent on that variable alone. Four states prohibit or limit the use of credit as a rating factor in determining auto insurance rates: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan.
Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following incidents applied: clean record (base), at-fault accident, single speeding ticket, single DUI conviction and lapse in coverage.
Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following differences in mileage: 2K, 5K, 12K (base), 15K and 20K.
Unless otherwise stated, rates are for 2023 vehicle models. For new vs used vehicles, we included the following year in our calculations: 2013.
Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the ages 18-70 (base: 40 years) applied. Depending on age, drivers may be a renter or homeowner. Age is not a contributing rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts due to state regulations. For teen drivers, rates were determined by adding a 16- or 17-year-old teen to their 40-year-old married parents' policy. The rates displayed reflect the total cost of a driver this age added to their parents’ policy.
The following states do not use gender as a determining factor in calculating premiums: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Michigan, North Carolina, Pennsylvania.
Rates were evaluated based on the following marital/family status: single (base), married, 40-year-old married man and woman. Marital status is not a rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts.
Bankrate Score
Our 2025 Bankrate Score for auto insurance considers key variables that our insurance editorial team determined impact policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These factors include a robust assessment of each company’s cost of coverage, product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. We grouped these factors into three essential categories — cost and ratings, coverage and savings, and support — which we then weighted in a tiered approach.
Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.

Tier 1 (Cost & ratings): To determine how well auto insurance companies satisfy these priorities, our team analyzed quoted premiums from Quadrant Information Services (if available), as well as any of the latest third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, Demotech and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
Tier 2 (Coverage & savings): We assessed companies’ coverage options and availability to help policyholders find a provider that balances cost with coverage. Additionally, we evaluated the discount options listed on each company’s website.
Tier 3 (Support): To encompass the many ways an auto insurance company can support policyholders, we analyzed avenues of customer accessibility along with community support. This analysis incorporated additional financial strength ratings from S&P and Moody’s and factored in a company’s corporate sustainability efforts.
Tier scores are unweighted to show the company's true score in each category out of a possible five points.

How we got these ratings
In May 2024, Bankrate collaborated with market research firm SliceMR to survey over 1,500 insurance customers nationwide, asking policyholders to rate their insurer’s cost, coverage, customer support and overall experience on a five-point scale. Bankrate and SliceMR collected and analyzed these customer ratings, along with website analytics and responses to three open-ended questions regarding customer experience. Responses are based on individual policyholders’ policy details and personal experience, and therefore cannot be verified for accuracy. Users received an incentive for their feedback. All ratings are unedited and have not been reviewed or approved by insurance carriers. User-generated ratings are separate from carrier Bankrate Scores — which are calculated based on our proprietary methodology — and may not match.
