OVERVIEW
Info Icon
If you live in Erie’s 12-state service area, the company could be a great choice for robust coverage and affordable premiums. Erie’s digital tools are lacking compared to its competitors, though, so it may not be the best choice for tech-savvy customers.
Policyholders who value cheaper car insurance and digital capabilities over bundling multiple insurance policies with the same company might consider Geico as their company of choice. Geico also tied for the Best Auto Insurance Company Overall in our 2024 Bankrate Awards.

Is Grange a good insurance company?

Claims experience
“My ex-wife recently had a claim with Grange. The car was totaled and they offered her a fair amount for her vehicle. After looking into it a little more we discovered something that made the car more valuable than everyone realized. I made a phone call and they promptly increased the payout by $800.”

Cost of coverage vs. coverage extent
“Grange’s homeowners deductible is high, and they don't cover much unless it's a huge loss (your home burning down, for example). I am going through a claim that was denied currently. A tree fell on my garage, causing damage to it, and they claimed that removing the tree would cost $500, including grinding down the stump. It also destroyed my patio furniture and fence (they refuse to cover the fence).”

Claim challenges
“My car was involved in a minor accident, not at all my fault. I got all the at-fault driver's details, got him to admit fault and contacted Grange. It started off very well, with them promising to manage all aspects of the claim and to claim off the other driver's insurance. They did as promised, with a bit of pushing from me and the repair was quoted and arranged. I did not claim anything else from the at-fault driver for my expenses, inconvenience or final selling price impact. The challenge came when I came to settle the final bill and the repair company insisted I pay the 'deductible' from my insurance. When I asked for this to be paid back by Grange, the problems started, with them procrastinating, with various excuses, for months. When I threatened them with legal action, the deductible was refunded within 24 hours!”

Quoting process
“Fast and easy quoting process. I also love that I have access to all of my policy information through my online account.”

In May 2024, Bankrate collaborated with market research firm SliceMR to survey over 1,500 insurance customers nationwide, asking policyholders to rate their insurer’s cost, coverage, customer support and overall experience on a five-point scale. Bankrate and SliceMR collected and analyzed these customer ratings, along with website analytics and responses to three open-ended questions regarding customer experience. Responses are based on individual policyholders’ policy details and personal experience, and therefore cannot be verified for accuracy. Users received an incentive for their feedback. All ratings are unedited and have not been reviewed or approved by insurance carriers. User-generated ratings are separate from carrier Bankrate Scores — which are calculated based on our proprietary methodology — and may not match.

How does this insurer compare to insurance companies you’ve had in the past?
It has better prices and ease of purchasing policies online. Although the claim process was slower than I expected in comparison to previous insurance companies I have used.
Name the number one reason that you’d recommend staying with this insurer and the number one reason that you’d consider leaving for a different company.
I'd stay for the competitive pricing and Leave due to the slow process of claims.

How does this insurer compare to insurance companies you’ve had in the past?
Is my first insurance company and this is honestly a very good experience and my expectations were higher than what I was expecting. They help me a lot whenever I was choosing to have them as my insurance company since I’ve had them they have been very supportive and always help me with any concerns and worries I’ve had.
Name the number one reason that you’d recommend staying with this insurer and the number one reason that you’d consider leaving for a different company.
The number one reason that I recommend staying with this insure is because they have the best policies around and the number one reason why I would consider leaving for a different company would probably be priced reasons
