In March 2024, the Arbella Insurance Foundation announced that it raised $3 million through employees and agents in 2023 for 516 charitable organizations throughout New England. In total, the Foundation has donated over $43.2 million since its creation in 2005.

Arbella car insurance review

Arbella Insurance Group offers “car insurance for New Englanders,” with coverage options and policy riders tailored toward the needs of drivers in Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. With a Bankrate Score of 4.0 out of 5.0, Arbella may be an option worth considering for drivers in the states where it does business.

As a small regional insurer, Arbella does not offer online quotes. If you’re considering buying an auto policy from Arbella, you will need to find a local agent — but you may want to compare any car insurance quote from Arbella with quotes from other carriers before making a final decision. To help drivers make informed insurance decisions, Bankrate’s editorial team reviews dozens of car insurance companies, considering average annual premium data from Quadrant Information Services along with policy features, financial strength and customer satisfaction ratings and experiences shared by real customers.

Arbella car insurance quotes by age

Young drivers, especially those under age 25, tend to pay higher premiums for auto insurance due to limited driving experience. Even in states like Massachusetts where insurers cannot use age as a rating factor, a lack of experience on the road signals a higher risk to insurance companies.

Arbella usually offers below-average rates for young drivers, especially those who stay on a parents’ policy rather than purchasing their own separate policy. Keep in mind that the average rates shown below are based on a clean driving record. It’s generally worth comparing car insurance quotes from multiple companies based on your own driver profile and that of any teens on your policy.

Is Arbella a good insurance company?

Arbella is a small insurance group with strong standard coverage offerings and generally low pricing for customers in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island. It particularly stands out for its long list of discounts for both auto and home insurance and its simple digital tools.

Both auto insurance rates and home insurance rates from Arbella tend to be lower than the national average. While the lack of online quoting may be a disadvantage for customers who prefer to purchase insurance online, Arbella’s network of local independent agents could make it a good fit for some shoppers.

What are real-life customers saying about Arbella?

When it comes to picking an insurance company, average rates and third-party professional ratings only provide part of the picture — especially when looking at a small company like Arbella. To get a better idea of the experiences that real Arbella customers have with their provider, Bankrate’s editorial team sourced first-hand takes from two online platforms: Reddit and Yelp. While Reddit offers a forum for frank discussion on a wide range of topics including insurance and personal finance, Yelp provides a platform for direct reviews from customers.

Reddit

Reddit users in regional forums dedicated to life in New England offered mixed views on Arbella’s auto and home insurance offerings. Overall, perspectives tended to be positive, though some users reported that the initially low rates they received from Arbella increased unexpectedly in later years.

Is Arbella auto insurance good?
“I have them on home and auto. I have had claims on both over the past 5 years and they have been excellent. The biggest upside for me is I use an actual agent over an online company. If I have a problem, I call my agent and they deal with it. No hassle, no learning the ins and outs. A call to a person that can deal with it. I like that.”

Arbella insurance rates
“I had Arbella for 4 years. When I started with them, they were the most competitive quote by far (Geico’s quote was nearly twice theirs), but I noticed that the premium never went down over the years, despite never making any claims, adding any drivers, or anything like that. So last year I shopped around and ended up with MAPFRE, which was much cheaper and provided the same amount of coverage.”

Yelp

Arbella’s overall rating on Yelp is fairly low, but a considerable number of policyholders gave 5-star reviews, balancing out negative perspectives with positive experiences. Arbella’s Director of Digital Strategy actively responds to both positive and negative company reviews on Yelp.

Arbella claims
“Six months after switching to Arabella, I was struck by another car, and my car was totaled. The staff at Arabella was outstanding in the efficiency of helping me in every way. I never had to wait to reach the people handling my case by phone I received a good amount of money from my car and was able to rent a car easily. Money was paid out to me quic[k]ly.. I enthusiastically give Arabella and the staff a five star rating and can honestly say I have never dealt with a company that was so professional and so outstanding and efficient! I tell all my friends to switch to Arabella.”

Arbella nonrenewal
“My insurance is paid up months ahead and they just sent me a letter for no renewal. I never had any claims for the years that I've been with them. And I've been on auto pay since the beginning. Not worth it. Go to a bigger company to have peace of mind.”

Bankrate Score

Our 2025 Bankrate Score for auto insurance considers key variables that our insurance editorial team determined impact policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These factors include a robust assessment of each company’s cost of coverage, product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. We grouped these factors into three essential categories — cost and ratings, coverage and savings, and support — which we then weighted in a tiered approach.

Each category was assigned a metric to determine performance, and the weighted sum adds up to a company’s total Bankrate Score — out of 5 points. Our scoring model provides a comprehensive view, indicating when companies excel across several key areas and highlighting where they fall short.

50% Cost & ratings

30% Coverage & savings

20% Support

  • Tier 1 (Cost & ratings): To determine how well auto insurance companies satisfy these priorities, our team analyzed quoted premiums from Quadrant Information Services (if available), as well as any of the latest third-party agency ratings from J.D. Power, AM Best, Demotech and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).
  • Tier 2 (Coverage & savings): We assessed companies’ coverage options and availability to help policyholders find a provider that balances cost with coverage. Additionally, we evaluated the discount options listed on each company’s website.
  • Tier 3 (Support): To encompass the many ways an auto insurance company can support policyholders, we analyzed avenues of customer accessibility along with community support. This analysis incorporated additional financial strength ratings from S&P and Moody’s and factored in a company’s corporate sustainability efforts.

Tier scores are unweighted to show the company's true score in each category out of a possible five points.
