Alfa car insurance review

Alfa car insurance is available to drivers in Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi. The company earned a Bankrate Score for auto insurance of 4.2 out of 5. In addition, it was recently awarded the top spot in J.D. Power's 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study for the Southeast region. This ranking is based on the quality of a company's customer support and suggests that Alfa places a high value on its relationships with policyholders.

Alfa offers standard car insurance policies along with a small list of endorsements that allow you to customize your coverage, including accidental death and dismemberment and accident forgiveness (in Alabama and Mississippi). Alfa has a generous handful of discounts available that could have a significant impact on your premium. Alfa car insurance quotes by age

Car insurance rates may vary based on age. In most cases, young drivers pay the highest rates for car insurance due to their lack of experience on the road. If you are a parent and add a teen driver to your policy, your rates will likely increase. In the table below, you can see Alfa’s average rates for drivers in various age groups. These quotes are for a driver with a clean driving history. Drivers with infractions on their record are likely to pay higher rates.

Alfa customer satisfaction

Researching third-party ratings for customer satisfaction, claims satisfaction and company complaints may help you choose the best insurance company for your needs. Some of the most reputable organizations that rate insurance companies are J.D. Power and the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC).

J.D. Power did not rate Alfa in its 2023 U.S. Auto Claims Satisfaction Study or 2024 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study — perhaps since its coverage is offered in such a limited region. In its 2024 U.S. Auto Insurance Study, however, Alfa holds the top spot for the Southeast region, with 693 points out of 1,000. This translates into a high number of satisfied customers who have had good experiences when filing claims or connecting with the company for another reason. To get an even better idea about Alfa’s claims-handling abilities and online tool capabilities, it might be helpful to speak with current customers.

Alfa auto insurance customer complaints

The NAIC tracks consumer complaints about insurance providers and uses that information to create a complaint index that it updates regularly. An index of 1.00 means that a company receives about as many complaints as expected given its market share. An index under 1.00 indicates fewer complaints than expected, while an index over 1.00 indicates more complaints.

Alfa's index for private passenger auto insurance was 1.76 in 2021, but the 2022 and 2023 indexes were zero.

Alfa car insurance discounts

Alfa offers a wide selection of car insurance discounts which may help you get a lower premium:

  • Umbrella discount: Policyholders who also have a qualifying commercial, personal or farm umbrella policy could receive a discount on their auto insurance.
  • Life insurance policy discount: Policyholders who also hold an Alfa life insurance policy may receive a discount on their auto insurance policy.
  • Occupational discount: Alfa offers occupational discounts to qualifying educators, military and first responders, state or federal employees and auto manufacturers.
  • Multi-car discount: Discounts may be available for policyholders who insure two or more private passenger vehicles on a single Alfa policy.
  • Homeownership: If you own a home you can get a discount on your policy, even if you’re not getting home insurance from Alfa.
  • Youth honor student: Full-time students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher can typically qualify for a lower insurance rate.

Alfa home insurance review

Alfa home insurance earned a Bankrate Score of 4.0, which places it above average. The company offers standard coverage options for homes, farms, churches and manufactured homes, with renters insurance also available. There are a handful of optional endorsements, including one that covers the repair or replacement of home systems, such as electrical or plumbing, and a home sharing endorsement if you use your property for short-term rentals.

Although Alfa's average rates are above the national average, the company offers several discounts that could save you a significant amount of money off your premium. You could be eligible for savings if you bundle your homeowners and auto insurance, for example, and there is a legacy discount for the children of Alfa policyholders. A discount that may be of interest to those in coastal areas is one for Alabama and Mississippi residents who fortify their homes against hurricanes and windstorms.

Alfa customer satisfaction

Since it is a smaller company, Alfa isn't rated by some national organizations that monitor customer satisfaction. For example, it is not included in J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Property Claims Satisfaction Study. However, its NAIC ratings can give a sense of Alfa's customer relationships.

Alfa home insurance customer complaints

Alfa had a near-baseline number of complaints for home insurance in 2021 and 2022, according to the NAIC Complaint Index. This seemingly indicates a high level of satisfaction among Alfa's home policyholders. In 2023, the company’s complaint index was 0.0.

Alfa home insurance discounts

Alfa offers a few home insurance discounts that could help you get a lower premium. However, some discounts are only available in select states. Here are the home insurance discounts advertised by Alfa Insurance:

  • Policy bundling: Alfa may provide a discount to customers who purchase home and auto insurance policies with the carrier.
  • Legacy customer: If your parent has an Alfa insurance policy, you may qualify for a discount on a home or renters insurance policy.
  • Safety equipment: If your home has safety features like burglar alarms, fire or smoke alarms or a deadbolt lock, you could qualify for savings.
  • Hurricane resistant materials: Some customers in Alabama and Mississippi may qualify for a discount if their home is fortified against hurricanes.

Alfa life insurance review

If you live in its service area and are in the market for life insurance, Alfa may be worth considering. It offers both term and permanent policy types, including no-medical-exam policies, a 30-year term option with return of premium and a final expenses plan to help cover funeral or medical costs.

Other unusual offerings include a policy called First Step Life that is designed for children aged 0 to 14 and does not require a medical exam, as well as a flexible universal life policy with variable premiums and a death benefit of $25,000 or over. Further, the company’s rapid issue term policy offers an easy application process and can be converted to permanent if you wish.

Whether or not Alfa is one of the best life insurance companies in the region for your needs, the company makes it easy to ask for quotes. Online quotes are available for term policies, while you will need to call a customer representative for a quote for permanent types of life insurance. The cost of your policy will depend on multiple factors, including your age, your health and the amount of coverage you purchase.

Is Alfa a good insurance company?

If you live in Alabama, Georgia or Mississippi, you may find that Alfa is a good insurance company with something to offer you. The company has solid choices for auto, home and life policies, with the opportunity to customize your insurance by adding endorsements, plus a robust list of discount opportunities.

As a regional carrier, Alfa is likely to have an excellent understanding of the needs of residents in the Southern states it serves. As an example, it offers a home discount to some residents who have weatherproofed their homes against hurricanes and windstorms.

Alfa doesn't offer all the digital tools and capabilities that some other insurers do, but it is worth considering if you prefer to handle your insurance business with a live agent rather than online.

What are real-life customers saying about Alfa?

To offer a clearer understanding of Alfa's customer experience, we’ve collected Alfa insurance reviews from actual customers who posted on Reddit and Yelp. These platforms feature candid insight and personal stories. Through this commentary, potential customers can better gauge what to anticipate from Alfa.

Alfa has been good to us
We have had Alfa for 28 years. We have our home, auto, and life insurance through them. I have had 2 wrecks (not at fault for either) that totaled my vehicles, and they paid so quick that both times, I had a new vehicle within a week. They replaced the roof on our house due to hail damage. It was super easy. They told us to get them an estimate. We got 3 and chose the mid-priced one. They paid it, and it was done. I worried about it because I have heard of other insurance companies canceling policies after roof replacements, but everything was fine. They have been very good to us.

Difficult to contact
They exist only in name. Good luck trying to contact anyone for any reason, but they'll make sure to reach out for your renewal. Smh. Roadside assistance is just as much as a joke as the rest of their services. I needed them around 8pm one night. Made five unanswered calls to them. Wound getting my own help. Then they had the audacity to try and raise my premium. Stay far away if you care about being in touch with your insurer.

Frequently asked questions about Alfa

Methodology

Bankrate utilizes Quadrant Information Services to analyze July 2024 rates for all ZIP codes and carriers in all 50 states and Washington, D.C. Rates are weighted based on the population density in each geographic region.

Auto

Quoted rates are based on a single, 40-year-old male and female driver with a clean driving record, good credit and the following full coverage limits:

  • $100,000 bodily injury liability per person
  • $300,000 bodily injury liability per accident
  • $50,000 property damage liability per accident
  • $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person
  • $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per accident
  • $500 collision deductible
  • $500 comprehensive deductible

To determine minimum coverage limits, Bankrate used minimum coverage that meets each state’s requirements. Our base profile drivers own a 2022 Toyota Camry, commute five days a week and drive 12,000 miles annually.

These are sample rates and should only be used for comparative purposes.

Age: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the ages 16-60 (base: 40 years) applied. Depending on age, drivers may be a renter or homeowner. Age is not a contributing rating factor in Hawaii and Massachusetts.

The rates for drivers ages 16-20 added to their parents' policy reflect the good student and driver's training discounts applied. The rates for drivers aged 16-20 on their own policy do not include the good student and driver's training discounts. Additionally, 25-year-old rates are based on the driver as a renter and 30+ on the driver as a homeowner.

Incidents: Rates were calculated by evaluating our base profile with the following incidents applied: clean record (base), single speeding ticket, single at-fault accident and single DUI conviction.

Credit-based insurance scores: Rates were calculated based on the following insurance credit tiers assigned to our drivers: “poor, average, good (base) and excellent.” Insurance credit tiers factor in your official credit scores but are not dependent on that variable alone. Four states prohibit or limit the use of credit as a rating factor in determining auto insurance rates: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Michigan.

Homeowners

Quoted rates are based on married male and female homeowners with a clean claim history, good credit and the following coverage limits:

  • Coverage A, Dwelling: $150,000, $300,000, $350,000, $450,000, $750,000
  • Coverage B, Other Structures: $15,000, $30,000, $35,000, $45,000, $75,000
  • Coverage C, Personal Property: $75,000, $150,000, $175,000, $225,000, $375,000
  • Coverage D, Loss of Use: $30,000, $60,000, $70,000, $90,000, $150,000
  • Coverage E, Liability: $500,000
  • Coverage F, Medical Payments: $1,000

The homeowners also have a $1,000 deductible, a $500 hail deductible and a 2 percent hurricane deductible (or the next closest deductible amounts that are available) where separate deductibles apply.

These are sample rates and should be used for comparative purposes only. Your quotes will differ.

Bankrate Scores

Our Bankrate Score considers variables our insurance editorial team determined impact policyholders’ experiences with an insurance company. These rating factors include a robust assessment of each company’s product availability, financial strength ratings, online capabilities and customer and claims support accessibility. Each factor was added to a category, and these categories were weighted in a tiered approach to analyze how companies perform in key customer-impacting categories.
