Insurance updates that affect Louisiana car owners

In April 2024, an insurance study found Louisiana drivers have the eighth-highest insurance rates in the country. Although there are common factors contributing to the higher costs — higher parts and labor costs and industry challenges over the past few years — the Louisiana legislature is investigating the state’s unusually high number of bodily injury claims and considering reforming the state’s insurance laws to require more transparency surrounding medical billing.

The following month, Louisiana lawmakers passed several pieces of legislation that could encourage new insurers to enter the state’s insurance market. They argued that by increasing the number of insurance companies writing policies in the state, drivers would have more options and could potentially secure better rates. To entice companies, the legislation prevents naming insurance companies in initial lawsuits and limits trial damages.
