Benefits of having excellent credit

The two major credit measurements are VantageScore and FICO. Both use data from credit bureaus but calculate scores differently. An excellent credit score ranges from 800 to 850 on the FICO scale, while VantageScore’s excellent tier falls between 781 and 850. Despite their differences, if you have excellent credit, both FICO and VantageScore will reflect it.

With an excellent credit score, you'll have access to some of the most valuable and rewarding credit cards on the market, but the advantages aren’t limited to credit cards. A trustworthy credit background could give you an advantage when you apply for housing, jobs, insurance, loans and more.

  • You can earn better rewards with access to more exclusive perks. Most credit cards that require an excellent credit score offer better rewards rates, broader spending categories and more appealing travel perks, purchase protections and warranties than cards available with fair or average credit
  • You could have a higher credit limit. If you demonstrate you’re responsible with credit, issuers may feel comfortable offering you higher credit limits, increasing your spending power.
  • You could qualify for better loans or a lower APR. When you have excellent credit, you have a better chance of getting the lowest APR available and lenders may be more willing to offer you more funding to cover large expenses like car loans, student loans and mortgages.

Expert advice on cards for excellent credit

When you have excellent credit, so many credit card options become available that it might be difficult to narrow down your choices. When choosing a credit card, you should consider rewards, cardholder perks, how it complements other cards, its list of transfer partners and whether you’ll keep it beyond the first year. Make sure that the card you choose will benefit you over the long term.

Maximizing your excellent credit

Excellent credit is an outstanding achievement that can deliver much value over time. If you’re curious how to maximize your excellent score, here are some tips from Bankrate credit card writers Ryan Flanigan and Brendan Dyer, who have credit scores above 800.

  • Credit Card Icon

Keep up your positive credit habits

If you have excellent credit, odds are you’re already paying your credit card bills on time and in full and keeping your credit utilization low. Stay focused on responsible use and long-term maintenance to sustain your excellent score.

“If you’re building credit, it can help to minimize your card use, pay your balance as frequently as possible and make a habit out of checking your issuer’s apps or going online to view your account,” Dyer explains. “Even if you know you don’t have a balance, make monitoring your card, savings and checking accounts a part of your weekly routine because it will keep your finances at the forefront of your mind.”

  • Online Icon

    Create a credit card strategy

Excellent credit affords you access to some of the best credit cards on the market. Take this opportunity to review different cards and develop a strategy to maximize returns and possibly upgrade older cards.

“Don't be afraid to add new cards or upgrade old ones, because even though you take a temporary hit to your credit, once you demonstrate responsible use, your score will go even higher than it was before,”  Flanigan explains.

Credit cards for excellent credit often offer some of the most valuable credit card perks, so don’t forget to maximize new perks to make your strategy effective.

“Now that I have a credit score over 800, I can’t imagine losing access to the rewards rates and perks that I’ve been enjoying,” Dyer says. “I’m particularly grateful for the American Express Gold Card, which I didn’t apply for until I had excellent credit. Although its annual fee wasn't easy to stomach at first, after holding the card for nearly two years now, I couldn't be more pleased with it.”

Share benefits with an authorized user

Adding an authorized user to your credit cards for excellent credit serves two purposes. First, it can help build the credit score of the authorized user if you use the card responsibly. Second, some credit card perks may also be extended to the authorized user. For example, some cards that offer Priority Pass Membership also grant access to authorized users.
