Bottom line

The Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard offered bonus rewards and a respectable flat rate on all other purchases making it a versatile airline card. It was designed for Virgin Atlantic loyalists who travel frequently and the redemption options reflected that.

As of October 2024, Bank of America discontinued the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard and converted all existing accounts to the Bank of America Unlimited Cash Rewards card. Virgin Atlantic now offers a similar card through Synchrony Bank called the Virgin Red Rewards Mastercard.

Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard Overview

For frequent flyers of Virgin Airlines who prefer rewards for future trips, the Virgin Atlantic World Elite Mastercard could be worth adding to your wallet. Earn 3X points on Virgin Atlantic purchases including flights, holiday packages, and in-flight extras plus 1.5X points on all other purchases. That makes the $90 annual fee easy to offset. Also, for those who don’t travel as much, this can act as a good flat-rate card for everyday buys.

That being said, this card is geared towards Virgin Atlantic customers only. While you can earn points on any eligible purchase, all rewards are only redeemable on Virgin Atlantic travel. For most this may be too narrow but for brand loyalists, this card can go a long way.

Bankrate’s take — Competitors fill the gap of a minor loss

Virgin Atlantic’s removal of the World Elite Mastercard is a minor loss to the market of mid-tiered airline cards. It was quickly replaced with a new Virgin Atlantic card iteration that has a slightly higher annual fee and more ways to earn rewards. However, the solid flat-rate 1.5X points on non-Virgin Atlantic purchases will be missed along with its low-entry welcome offer. There are several mid-tiered airline and travel cards carrying comparable offerings, which makes the discontinuation of this card a little less painful. If you’re looking for your next airline card after losing the Virgin Atlantic World Elite, consider one of Bankrate's top airline cards

We rate credit cards using a proprietary card scoring system that ranks each card’s estimated average rewards rate, estimated annual earnings, welcome bonus value, APR, fees, perks and more against those of other cards in its primary category.

Each card feature is assigned a weighting based on how important it is to people looking for a card in a given category. These features are then scored based on how they rank relative to the features on other cards in the category. Based on these calculations, each card receives an overall rating of 1-5 stars (with 5 being the highest possible score and 1 being the lowest).

We analyzed over 150 of the most popular rewards and cash back cards to determine where each stacked up based on their value, cost, benefits and more. Here are some of the key factors that influenced this card’s overall score and how the score influenced our review:
