Its ease of use, helpful educational tools and high rankings in the Google and Apple app stores stood out above its competitors. And while TurboTax isn't the cheapest option if you don’t qualify for its free version, its straightforward question-and-answer interview tool makes it a top pick for those seeking to file their taxes quickly and accurately.

We ranked TaxSlayer as the best low-cost tax software. What we liked most about TaxSlayer is that for only $22.95, you can file your federal tax return regardless of your tax situation (state returns cost an additional $39.95). For instance, if you have various tax deductions, received self-employment income and expect to report multiple tax forms, you can file at a low cost without any limitations. 

And like other tax software providers, TaxSlayer offers a free filing option if you meet certain requirements. For example, you’ll qualify for its free version if your taxable income is less than $100,000, you don’t have dependents, and you opt not to itemize your deductions. If you start filing your tax return using TaxSlayer’s free version and no longer qualify, the program will switch you to its TaxSlayer Classic version.

H&R Block has more than 8,800 retail offices across the globe, so if you’re looking to file taxes in person, there’s likely a branch nearby. Both walk-ins and appointments are accepted. Unlike other tax software providers, H&R Block allows you to sit down with a tax pro who will prepare your tax filings for you. If you don’t want to wait, you can drop off your tax documents and skip the appointment time if you choose. And once your tax return is complete, you can approve your tax return virtually through its app, MyBlock, or head to the office to do it in person. 

While you pay a bit more than using do-it-yourself online tax software, the $89 cost is still reasonable for a tax pro to complete your taxes for you. If you need to file a state tax return, you’ll need to pay an additional fee of $70 per state.
